We, the St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa, Alumni Association, Colombo, have been conducting the above Tournament at Batticaloa, annually for the past six years among clubs drawn from all parts of Sri Lanka and the services and are privileged to conduct this seventh edition on April 28, 29 & 30, 2018 at St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa.
This Tournament is organized to commemorate the life and times of Basketball Legend, Rev. Fr. Eugene John Herbert S.J., to maintain interest in the game at Batticaloa and to promote national integration.
Unlike previous tournaments this year’s one is being organized among leading school teams from around the country to meet the needs of the student population and has the blessings of the Zonal Director of Education and the Schools Basketball Association.
At this Tournament it is also proposed to inaugurate the I.T. CANAGARETNAM CHALLENGE CUP in recognition of the great contribution made by Past pupil Ignatius T. Canagaretnam Senior DIG to his Alma Mater and to Basketball at Police and national level.
Towards this end a match has been scheduled on the final day of this Tournament, April 30 at 4.00 pm between the Police and Batticaloa District Basketball Teams for the I.T. Canagaretnam Challenge Cup.
This match is designed to link I.T. Canagaretnam, the Police, whom he served with distinction, his Alma Mater and Batticaloa, the land of his birth, which were all close to his heart.

The Annual Christmas Carols & Get together of the St.Michael’s Collge, Batticaloa Alumni Association(Colombo) will be he held on the 09th December 2017 at Bambalapitiya Government Flats, Welfare Association Hall, Cololmbo 04. commencing at 6.00 P.M. This is organised as a family Get together of all Michaelites and Batticaloa Friends annually.
72nd Annual General meeting was held on the 30th September 2017 at Hotel Sapphire , Colombo 6 followed by the Holy mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Dexter Gray S.J. at St. Lawrence’s Church , Colombo 6.
The meeting was called to order by the President Bradley Ockersz at 7.030 P.M. Guest of Honour Rev.Fr. Paul Satkunanayagam S.J. – President of the St.Michael’s College Old Boys Assoiation (Parent Body) commenced the AGM with a prayer followed by the observance of the 2 minutes silence for all departed Michaelites and their loved ones.
The President on his welcome address thanked all the members who were present on this day and said that Fair amount of past pupils attended this AGM and he stressed that a large number of Michaelites and families are living in Colombo City and its suburbs. He requested & insisted the members and old boys to persuade and encourage them to attend this Annual Get together and join hands to move this Association forward into a another step ahead.
I.T.Canagaratnam the senior Vice Patron of the Association introduced the Chief Guest to the house.
Rev.Fr. Dexter Gray S.J – The Current new Jesuit Provincial was our Chief Guest of the AGM and gave a good account of himself and the new project of Loyola Campus for the benefit of all school leavers for their higher studies in Batticaloa.
Other Guests of Honour were Mr. Ganeshamoorthy – Director of Ministry of Trade & commerce who was the main live wire for various development activities at our Alma Mater and Batticaloa was also honoured on this day and Mr. Pius Anandarajah the new Principal on his address emphasized that we should try and make a Rev Priest as the head of our school and he will do the best and make every effort as an old boy with the Michaelite Spirit to improve all activities to the earlier accepted level to the community. He thanked the Association for what we are doing for our Alma Mater.
Members, Guests , family and children of the Michaelites also took part in this Annual Event of fellowship followed by the AGM. It was another great event where nearly 100 people connected to Alma Mater gathered and enjoyed the evening meeting their friends , collegues and old Michaelites.

Rev. Fr. Crowther Challenge Trophy is scheduled to happen for the fourth time at St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia on 1st July 2017.
This annual encounter has been inaugurated on the 13th October 2004 between the two leading colleges. In the first encounter held in 2004, SMC won the under 19 title while STC secured the under 15 trophy. Both the matches were played at STC front court and large number of old boys from both the institutions were present to cheer the boys.
After a long break, both the schools agreed to continue this event and organized the 2nd encounter in 2013 but due to the unfortunate demise of Mas. Eugene Thilakshan the encounter was postponed to 2015.
Second encounter was again held at STC in 2015 where STC college bagged under 15 & 19 trophies while SMC managed to secure ‘Old Boys Challenge’.
Following the success of both the encounters, the organizers decided to continue this tradition. Thus, the 3rd Rev. Fr. Crowther Challenge Trophy 2016 held at Hebert Stadium, St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa.on the 12th September 2016. This was organized by the Batticaloa old boys, school authorities along with St.Michael’s Sports Development Forum. All three matches were won by our College which is a record . Though the STC U-19 were the schools Champions 2016 our boys were able to beat them.
We invite you all Michaelites young & old to come watch the three matches and show your support, appreciation and cheer our boys to victory.
The Annual Hebert Memorial Invitation Basketball National Tournament will be held on the 28th, 29th & 30th of April 2017. This tournament is organized for the sixth consecutive year and the following teams were invited to participate in this tournament.
Kanesharajah Sinotharan has made the Michaelites proud again by representing Sri Lanka beach kabaddi team as the vice captain. Sino has been a pillar of strength for both Batticaloa and National teams he has represented. This humble young man had been a part of Indian Pro Kabaddi League. We wish him all the best for the upcoming tournament.
We’re proud and elated to fully sponsor the cost for SMC Under 19 Cricket team for their Div 3 Level 1 Pre Quarter Final match against Shashthrananda MMV, Dehiwala held on 16th March 2017. Boys fought hard and lost the match narrowly. hough it was a heartbreaking loss for the boys we must congratulate them on this fantastic run. We can simply say this is as the greatest achievement in Cricket by SMC. We’re hearing that SL schools cricket association would appreciate the boys in near future with the things they deserve.

The 71st Annual General Meeting was called to order by the President Julian Jayaratnarajah at 7.15. P.M. after the arrival of our chief guest Miss. Rajes Kandiah (former English teacher) , guests of honour Mr. N.Pathmanathan and Mr. Ganeshamoorthy, both the senior Govt. Officials were teachers at our College. President Julian Jayaratnarajah welcomed the chief guest, guests of honour, members, all other family members and friends who were present at the special occasion. He expressed his gratitude & appreciation for the committee members who supported and cooperated in the last year in all activities of the association.
Secretary Ashley Rajadurai read out the minutes of the 70th AGM which was adopted by the house proposed by K. Thurairajaratnam and seconded by R.C. Perumal He also presented the Annual report for the year 2015-16 which was circulated and which was also adopted by the house. Treasurer Vithiananthan presented the Annual audited accounts for the year ended 30th September 2016 with the total net worth of Rs. 1,739,842.46 which was adopted by the house(proposed by N. Sivanandarajah and seconded by Alston Jeganathan).
Chief Guest Miss. Rajes Kandiah was introduced by our senior vice patron I.T.Canagaratnam where he pointed that he left the school when Ms.Kandiah joined the service as a teacher in our College. Being an old girl from Vincent Girls High School after finishing her SSC she continued her studies at St. John’s College Academy for her HSC where she entered the University of Peradeniya where she graduated. She started her career at our Alma Mater and completed nearly 30 years in service as the English and History teacher rendered yeoman service during her tenure of employment. Chief Guest in her speech commented her unforgettable events took place during her tenure at College and commented on the discipline of the school then administered by the Jesuits compared to present era. Specially she mentioned about the present fancy about the tuition classes by all students and the commitment of the teachers then. Her speech was very interesting and very lively and enjoyed by every person who attended.
Mr. Besleo Vaz the Present Principal of our Alma Mater thanked the valuable contrition by the Colombo Alumni to the school. He expects the continuous support and revealed that the President of the parent body of the OBA should be the Principal of the school as per the circular of the Ministry of Education. He made valuable contribution in attending our meeting on this day and made humble request to our guest of honour Mr.Ganeshamoorthy to fill the vacancy for minor employees existing at our College.
